November – The Non Month

Navigating the “Non-Month” of November: Embracing the Quiet Before the Storm

November often feels like the forgotten middle child of the year. Sandwiched between the excitement of autumn and the oncoming rush of December’s festivities, it can feel like a “non-month” where very little happens. The crisp air of October’s golden days has faded, and the festive lights of December are just out of reach. Instead, November greets us with grey skies, early nights, and a creeping sense of pressure as Christmas looms on the horizon.

For many, November is a strange and unsettling month. It’s a time when the hustle of the holiday season begins to bubble up, yet we’re not quite there yet. We feel the weight of December’s demands, the shopping lists, social events, and end-of-year reflections starting to form, and it can leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or even exhausted before the real sprint has begun.

But what if we embraced November for what it is… a rare pause in the year? Instead of rushing ahead or allowing anxiety to build, November offers a unique opportunity to slow down, reflect, and prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally for what’s to come. Here are some thoughts and pointers on how to navigate this quieter, often overlooked month, and use it as a time for personal growth and mindful preparation.

1. Acknowledge the Pressure, but Don’t Let It Rule You

As soon as Halloween is over, many of us start to feel the looming presence of Christmas. It’s in the shop windows, on the TV, and in our inboxes with sales and promotions. It’s easy to start feeling behind, even though the festive season hasn’t fully arrived yet.

The key here is to acknowledge that pressure without letting it dominate your November. Yes, there will be a lot to do in December, but now is not the time to jump into that headfirst. Recognise the feeling, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that it’s okay to move slowly for now. This is your chance to avoid burnout by pacing yourself.

2. Use November as a Month of Reflection

One of the best ways to reframe November is to see it as a time for quiet reflection. The year is almost over, but we’re not quite in the space for New Year’s resolutions. Instead, take stock of where you are right now. What have been the highlights of your year? What lessons have you learned? What habits or thought patterns might you want to leave behind as you head into 2024?

Journaling during November can be especially powerful. Write about how you’re feeling, what’s on your mind, and where you’d like to focus your energy in the coming months. By reflecting on the year, you can enter December with a clearer mind, more grounded, and ready to tackle what lies ahead.

3. Practice Mindful Rest

In a world that glorifies constant productivity, it can be difficult to allow yourself to truly rest. But November is calling you to do just that. This is a month to practice mindful rest, and not the kind where you’re scrolling through social media or half-watching TV, but the kind where you actively engage in stillness.

Rest doesn’t just mean sleep. It can mean taking long walks through nature, meditating for a few minutes each day, or curling up with a book without the need to be “doing” something. It doesn’t matter where you are, city, coast or country. You can find wildness in the city centres just as much as you can in the sea, the fields, and the forests. It’s all made of the same stuff. Wherever you are; if you’re feeling the November blues, step outside and breathe in the wildness of the earth. Find the wildness within you. Breathe it. Become it. Let it remind you that rest is as much a part of life as action.

By allowing yourself moments of true rest, you’re replenishing your energy stores, so when December arrives, you’ll be ready to face its demands with a calm, clear mind.

4. Start Setting Intentions, Not Goals

There’s a big difference between setting intentions and setting goals. Goals are about achieving specific outcomes; intentions are about how you want to feel and experience the process. In November, rather than focusing on rigid goals for the holiday season or the end of the year, begin setting softer, more flexible intentions.

For example, instead of setting a goal to “get all Christmas shopping done by December 1st,” an intention could be “I will approach the holiday season with calm and joy.” This shifts the focus from ticking off tasks to how you want to be as you move through these next few weeks.

Intentions help you stay grounded and present in your actions. They remind you that it’s not just about what you do, but how you do it. By setting intentions in November, you’re creating a foundation of mindfulness that can carry you through the busyness of December with more grace and ease.

5. Establish Boundaries Early

The social obligations of December can start to pile up before we’ve even had a chance to breathe. Now is the perfect time to reflect on your boundaries. What do you want to say “yes” to in December, and what might you need to decline? Being intentional about how you spend your time and energy in the coming weeks can help prevent feelings of overwhelm later on.

Remember, saying “no” to things that drain you is an act of self-care. Use November to start thinking about your priorities; whether that’s spending quality time with close family, taking time for yourself, or making space for rest in the midst of holiday events.

6. Focus on Small Acts of Gratitude

Cultivating gratitude can help shift your mindset in powerful ways. Instead of focusing on the pressures of December, take time each day to notice small moments of joy and peace in your life.

It could be the warmth of a cup of tea in the morning, the sound of rain on the window, or the laughter of a loved one. Gratitude helps us stay grounded in the present and keeps the mind from spiralling into anxiety about the future.

Embrace the Stillness of November

November might not be a month of grand events or milestones, but that is its gift. It’s the quiet before the storm — a time for stillness, reflection, and preparation. Rather than rushing ahead or feeling the weight of December before it arrives, embrace this month for what it offers: a chance to slow down, recalibrate, and step into the coming weeks with intention.

As your transformational life coach, I encourage you to treat this November as an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and your inner calm. When December’s whirlwind arrives, you’ll be ready. Grounded, energised, and fully present.

Here’s to navigating November with mindfulness and ease.
